1.
Does it cost anything to
become a donor?
Sometimes, if you are joining at a bone marrow drive, the testing for
your first Human Leukocyte Antigen (HLA) test is covered by local philanthropists
or businesses. However, if you join independently, you may have to
pay the HLA typing fee out of your pocket. If
so, it is approximately $65. This is what I had to pay for a
'remote donor kit' and the necessary test. After
that, any costs are paid by the recipient if you are lucky enough to be
a match.

2.
Do I get paid to become a
donor?
While some people have chosen to sell their marrow for oncology studies,
to be a true volunteer, you do not get paid.

3. What do I receive
if I become a donor?
You receive the honor of saving someone's life. I personally
feel that that in itself is an amazing reward for any pain you will go
through. While you may receive cards, or letters, of thanks from
the recipient and his or her family, you should not accept monetary
gifts. In 365 days you may be eligible to receive contact
information for your recipient, but only if both parties agree to
it. After that, you may cull a relationship if you will and meet
your recipient face to face! Some donors, who donate twice and
very rarely three times may receive a special jeweled pin to honor their
selflessness. Sometimes you may also be invited to banquets
specifically in honor of completed donors.
